How to Tell When It Is Time to Euthanize Your Pet

When your pet is sick, its best for owners to think of euthanasia as a present. It provides your pet with much-needed relief from otherwise insufferable pain. But how do you know when it's time to say goodbye? If you say goodbye too soon, you may lose out on precious time together. If you wait too long, your pet could further endure great pain.

The best advice on when to get the procedure done is to, instead of looking for the "ideal" time, make the greatest decision possible from a loving place. If you're contemplating the option, it's important to have an open and honest talk with our veterinarians at our animal hospital about your pet's health and quality of life.

Since we know this can be a very difficult decision in someone's life, we have comprised a list of questions about finding out if it's the right time.

  • Is it feasible for my pet to recover with a treatment strategy that I can afford and commit to both financially and personally?
  • Is my pet's life enjoyable?
  • Is he/she eating and drinking?
  • Are they able to urinate and defecate?
  • Do they like being with people?
  • Is there a greater percentage of good days than bad?

If you respond no to any of these questions, it may be time to discuss euthanasia with our veterinarians.

Once you've decided on a course of action, our veterinarians will usually go through the process with you before beginning. If you need further explanation or clarifications, don't be afraid to ask. Regardless of where you do it, make sure your pet has a comfy blanket or bed to lay on. Our veterinarians will most likely point you in the direction of a place where your pet can see and hear you. Our veterinarians will ask if you would want to spend the last few minutes alone with your pet after he or she has verified that your pet has expired.
