Questions to Ask Before Your Pet's Surgery

Knowing that your pet needs surgery can be scary. However, understanding the procedure and recovery process will help to put your mind at ease. At Power Road Animal Hospital in Mesa, AZ, our experienced veterinarians will guide you through the surgery process and explain everything. We will also answer your questions. Here are some important questions to ask before your pet's surgery.

What Are the Pre-Surgery Requirements for My Pet?

Pre-surgery requirements include several guidelines that prepare your pet for the surgery. These include bloodwork to check the liver and kidney values, as well as an ECG to check the heart function. Your pet will need to fast (no food) 12 hours prior to arrival at the hospital. Our veterinarians may give your pet restrictions on certain physical activities or tell you to ensure your pet completes a previously prescribed medication.

What Behaviors Should I Expect to See in My Pet after Surgery?

Pets may try to lick or scratch at the area after surgery. Using an Elizabethan collar (e-collar or cone) can prevent this from happening. Your pet may appear tired or lethargic after surgery or may not want to eat that dinner that night. Your pet's doctor will let you know what to expect and what to watch for.

What Are the Post-Surgery Requirements for My Pet?

It is important to know how to care for your pet after surgery, so we thoroughly prepare you for your pet's home care needs. There may be bandages needing to be changed or feeding restrictions, or follow-up appointments needed. When you bring your pet home, you will be prepared and know what the next steps are.
