Signs of Pet Heat Stroke

It is important to keep your pet safe in the heat. Pet heat stroke is a severe condition that can prove fatal if you're not careful. At Power Road Animal Hospital in Mesa, AZ, our veterinarians treat pet heat stroke and will guide you on how to avoid it.

What Does Heat Stroke for a Pet Mean?

Essentially, heat stroke means that your pet's body temperature has risen to an unsafe level, which is typically above 100-102 degrees Fahrenheit. Unlike humans, pets have far fewer glands that allow for sweating, and they can quickly overheat.  Heat stroke commonly happens when pets stay outside for hours at a time, if they're left inside a hot car, or they don't have the hydration they need on hot days.

Signs of Pet Heat Stroke

As a pet owner, you should always be aware of heat stroke in pets and have an urgent response, as it is life-threatening. Some symptoms include:

  • Drooling, panting, or heavy breathing
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Your pet has difficulty walking or collapses suddenly
  • Seizures

These conditions worsen quickly, so contact our veterinarians immediately should you notice any of these signs.

Pet Heat Stroke Prevention

Heat stroke prevention is all about making sure you're prepared. Never leave your pet in a hot car for any reason unsupervised, even if you leave the window cracked. If you're outside playing, try to stay out of direct sunlight, take breaks, and have plenty of water readily available. If possible, go outdoors when the prime hours of the sun aren't as damaging. Try early in the morning or during evening hours, not the middle of the day. When your pet is outside, try to provide shady areas for it.
