The Benefits of K-Laser Therapy Treatments

Therapeutic laser treatments have been around since the early 2000s, generally in chiropractic clinics. Patients have had such success with them that we are increasingly seeing their use with pets as well. In the United States, for example, many vets have been using lasers on pets for at least five or ten years for a variety of ailments. Canada has been a bit slower to adopt the procedure but we are increasingly seeing more laser treatment used with dogs and cats.
Cypress St. Animal Hospital is happy to announce that we have just acquired a K-Laser which is the first therapy to use three different types of light waves at the same time. The K-Laser is popular with veterinarian clinics south of the border but very few exist in Vancouver. It was approved by the FDA in 2005 and Canada Health in 2012.

How Does the K-Laser Work?

The K-laser is a painless treatment for therapeutic effect in three areas: decreasing pain, reducing inflammation, and increasing circulation, which will speed up recovery time for any injury – or combating chronic conditions.
The K-Laser can produce up to 15 watts of energy at a time. The laser light is diffused to a spot the size of a quarter which can help target very specific parts of the body. The K-Laser is unique because it is the only Class 4 therapy laser that utilizes these three infrared wavelengths, allowing for deep penetration into the body, making it perfect for joint or bone pain. The Class 4 delivers more energy per session and therefore can deliver therapeutic dosages of laser light to a greater amount of tissue than the Class 3 laser.

The Benefits of a K-Laser

Because the K-Laser is safe, it can be used on many parts of a pet to combat a number of injuries or conditions – the most common is arthritis and myofascial pain which is a variety of muscle pains that range from referred pain to muscle knots.
If you’re pet is injured in, say, a car accident, a surgeon might recommend surgery to replace a joint or hip. There are certainly many times when surgery is appropriate and needs to be performed but sometimes there are alternatives to surgery.

If you have a pet with arthritis, you can start the laser treatment with tow to three sessions per week then decrease them to once a week. If the arthritis is more advanced than more sessions may be needed.
After the therapy, the pet owner might see the pet more active. For example, they might climb the stairs easier, play with a ball more, and have better mobility in general. Depending on the injury, the K-Laser can either supplement or replace pain medication all together. In some instances, the pet may only need
Laser treatment won’t cause your dog to have any unwanted side effects. Best of all there is no shaving required as it can be used over the fur and won’t burn the skin. In a typical treatment session, the laser wand is applied to the area to be treated. Depending on the injured area, the treatment can take up to 20 minutes.
