What Is Biofilm?

Biofilm is a type of secretion created by bacteria. The film works to cover the ear and other areas of the pet and works as a protective layer of protection guarding the pet’s immune system from minimizing the presence of that bacteria. It also works very effectively at preventing antibiotic treatments and ear cleaners from working on pets. This makes it hard to remove the bacteria that’s inside the pet’s ears and, in many cases, causing their discomfort and pain.

If your pet struggles with constant or chronic ear infections, it could be the result of biofilm. Biofilm is present even if the ear looks as though it is clean. Over time, the bacteria present in the ear will continue to grow and develop, hidden by this protective film. And, this often leads to impaction of the ear wax and other debris within the ear. If this is left untreated, even for a short period of time, it can rupture. When that happens, it can destroy or damage the ear drum and move into the middle ear, further damaging your pet’s hearing.

Is It Present?

• It is easily undetected. The ear can look clean and still be damaged.
• A buildup of earwax can be present as well.
• Your pet may seem to be uncomfortable and in pain, tugging at its ears.
• Redness and swelling are common signs.
• The pet may scratch the ears or rub them on various objects.
• Your pet may seem hard of hearing.
