Dr.
Duane A. Kimmey

Dr. Kimmey was born and raised in Oberlin, OH and relocated to Riverview, MI when he was 12 years old. His passion for veterinary medicine began at the young age of 8 and developed over many summers spent on his grandfather’s 500 acre dairy farm. Dr. Kimmey attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate studies then transferred to Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine to receive his doctorate in 1990. In his senior year of vet school he received the “Wade O. Brinker” award; an award given to the most outstanding senior student in orthopedic surgery, selected by their peers.

After receiving his DVM, Dr. Kimmey was accepted into and completed a 16-month small-animal rotating internship program in medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and critical care at Michigan Veterinary Specialists. He began working in private practice in the Detroit metropolitan area. He owned and operated a mobile practice called Kimmey’s Veterinary Unit, and later went on to purchase and operate North Metro Veterinary Hospital from 2002 to 2009. During that time, he was also a freelance writer for the Detroit News with a weekly column answering reader’s veterinary questions. Dr. Kimmey relocated to Chicago in 2009 to work with his classmate at The Animal Doctor in Cary. IL. A few years later he accepted the Chief of Staff position at Lincolnway Animal Hospital in Matteson, IL. After getting married in 2015 he determined to relocate closer to home, which brought him to Sutton Road Animal Hospital in June 2017.

Dr. Kimmey has a strong interest in surgery, especially orthopedics. He is certified in PennHIP; a procedure used to evaluate and determine hip laxity in the canine patient. He is a member of the AVMA, CVMA, Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Dr. Kimmey proudly serves as a deacon at New Community Baptist Church in Aurora. He has a wonderful wife, Sophia, 3 children (Jasmine, Nia, and Jada) and two grandchildren (Brooklyn and Jaxon) who keep him going with a smile on his face. The couple has a 3-year old rescued Yorkie named “Prince Roger Festus”. He is a master scuba diver and enjoys exploring old shipwrecks in the great lakes. He also enjoys playing chess, golf, water skiing and listening to live traditional jazz music.
