Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy At Pet Vet Partners

Medical science continues to find new and astonishingly effective ways to help the body heal itself and manage painful problems -- and that goes for veterinary medicine as well as medicine for humans. If your pet is struggling to get over an injury or cope with chronic pain, we may have exactly what he needs here at Pet Vet Partners. Our veterinary team in Crete, IL, and Dyer, IN offers a non-pharmaceutical, non-invasive form of treatment known as laser therapy.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

You may already know about laser surgery, an advanced surgical technique that uses a precision laser instead of a scalpel. But laser surgery and laser therapy are very different things. Laser therapy uses a low-level or "cold" laser which operates at a much lower frequency than a surgical laser. Instead of cutting the skin, it passes right through it to deliver its healing powers at deeper tissue levels. The frequency of the laser energy causes the mitochondria (cellular "organs") to produce more of a chemical called ATP. Since ATP fuels cellular processes, this phenomenon, which is called photobiomodulation, helps your pet's cells repair themselves and rebuild damaged tissues.

Laser therapy also enhances the circulation in the area being treated. This means that tissues can receive more nutrients and oxygen for even more effective tissue repair. It also helps the tissues expel fluids and inflammatory waste products, thus reducing both swelling and pain. This combination of features makes it ideal for treating both acute and chronic conditions. Your veterinarian at our clinic may prescribe it for hip dysplasia, recovery from dental or internal surgery, arthritis, sprains and strains, and neurological symptoms such as chronic nerve pain. It is especially helpful as an alternative to painkilling medications for animals who cannot safely take such drugs.

A Soothing Source of Relief for Your Pet

Before we prescribe laser therapy for your pet, we will perform an evaluation of his condition to determine the exact nature of the disease or injury. If laser treatment makes sense for such a condition, we can proceed with the first session right away. There's no need to shave the area or anesthetize your pet. Not only is the treatment completely painless, but most pets enjoy the soothing sensation. Best of all, your pet will feel better and/or regain mobility without surgery or drugs.
