What Microchipping Does
When a pet is microchipped, identification of the owner and pet is implanted within their body. This is important for pets that tend to wander away from their homes or that are at risk of being stolen. If a pet is found and brought to a facility with a microchip reader, the identification can be accessed and you will be alerted of their whereabouts.
What Happens During an Appointment for Microchipping
Our veterinarian will have you bring your pet to our facility to have a complete examination done before it is microchipped. This will ensure that your pet is healthy enough to have the procedure done. After your pet is cleared for this service, your identification is typed into a database. This information is then uploaded into a small chip via a computer program. The implant is then placed inside of your pet.
The Implanting Process
To place an implant inside of your pet, our veterinarian will place the chip into a device that looks much like an immunization needle. The implant is pushed underneath the layers of your pet's skin. This procedure does not cause your pet any pain, but the site of the injection may be a bit tender after the process is done. Because of this, our vet recommends placing the implant in the shoulder blade area of a pet. This way the dog or cat will not be able to bite or scratch at the injection site during the healing process.
What Happens If Your Pet Is Found
Humane societies and veterinarians' offices are equipped with microchip readers. If a pet is found and brought to one of these facilities, a worker will use the reader to scan the pet to see if it has an implant in place. If so, the information uploaded to the device will show up on the device. The owner of the pet will then be called to alert them of their pet's whereabouts. Microchipping is a protective measure that will take away the uncertainty about the ownership of an animal and is used to reunite pets and their owners promptly.
