World Rabies Day September 28th

World Rabies Day

Pet owners in Winston- Salem often worry about rabies. Although rabies is indeed a dangerous and often lethal disease which affects pets, pet owners can fight it through awareness and prevention. Rabies awareness, in fact, is one of your best weapons against rabies outbreaks. To increase awareness and education among pet owners, World Rabies Day was initiated.

This year World Rabies Day will be September 28th 2015 making the month of September Rabies Awareness Month. The event was created to help pet owners learn how they can prevent rabies in their pets and the humans who interact with their pets. The theme of the 2015 World Rabies Day this year is “End Rabies Together.” Not only is World Rabies Day about preventing rabies but it is also about educating the public on the impact that rabies can have in their community.

From the beginning World Rabies Day has educated over 100 million people and assisted in the vaccinations of over 3 million animals against rabies. Most people do not realize that a person dies from rabies every ten minutes each year. Rabies deaths are completely preventable. When pet vaccinations are properly given rabies cannot pass onto humans. This is why having your pets vaccinated is so very important.

Rabies Prevention

Another important aspect of rabies prevention is being aware of what to look for as far as signs and symptoms of a rabies infection. Early detection is crucial to getting proper treatment. Here are a few of the signs you can look for: numbness around the spot you believe was infected, high temperatures and hallucinations can all be symptoms.

It is also important to remember that children are especially prone to rabies because they play with animals often and are sometimes not aware of the proper way to interact with animals they are not personally acquainted with. Educating children on the proper way to deal with animals is crucial to keeping them safe.
