Pet Anesthesia: What You Should Know
There are two types of pet anesthesia: local and general. Local anesthesia will numb a targeted area of a pet's body while the pet retains full consciousness and awareness. Most often, however, we recommend general anesthesia for pets, which allows us to temporarily sedate a pet so he or she is "asleep" through the entire procedure.
Both types of anesthesia are administered using an injection. Prior to putting your pet under anesthesia, however, we will want to perform some blood work and possibly other labs. This is done in the days or weeks leading up to your pet's appointment and helps us ensure that anesthesia is a safe option for your pet. This lab work also helps us to determine the necessary dosage for your pet and his or her specific procedure being performed.
It is not uncommon for pet owners to experience some ambivalence or uncertainty about their pet going under anesthesia. While it's true that there are potential risks with any anesthetic, our veterinary team takes all the necessary precautions to keep things as safe for your pet as possible. This includes carefully monitoring your pet's vital signs before, during, and after your pet's procedure. In most cases, pets come out of anesthesia shortly after their procedures and experience no serious side effects at all. The most common side effect that pet owners may notice is a little bit of lethargy, which usually resolves within 12-24 hours.
