Types of Services Offered at Winston-Salem Veterinary Hospital

  • Wellness Exams- As soon as your new pet arrives, schedule an appointment with us for a Winston-Salem pet physical exam. Besides providing a health baseline, we’ll evaluate your pet’s overall health. A common finding during this Winston-Salem puppy and kitten care visits are the presence of fleas, ticks, or intestinal worms. After treating your pet, we’ll set up a preventive plan against these parasites. Physical exams are more frequent for the first year of pets’ lives as we work together to make sure they get a strong, vigorous start.
  • Pet Vaccinations- The most important step for your puppy or kitten’s strong, vigorous start is to vaccinate them. Vaccinations are the one and only way to protect your pet from dangerous and life-threatening illnesses. Puppies and kittens need more frequent vaccinations during their first year to prevent overwhelming their underdeveloped immune systems.  After the first year, they are put on a yearly vaccination schedule.
  • Types of Vaccinations- Vaccinations are classified as core or non-core, and for puppies, core vaccines include canine parvovirus, canine hepatitis, distemper, and rabies. Core vaccines for cats include feline distemper, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus and, of course, rabies. Non-core vaccines are not required unless suggested by your lifestyle. For example, if you plan to spend time outdoors with your puppy, the vaccine for Lyme disease would be a good idea.
  • Spaying/Neutering- As the leader in Winston-Salem puppy & kitten care, we firmly believe that every pet should be spayed or neutered, both for the sake of the pet’s health and to stop the explosion of unwanted pets crowding shelters. The health benefits for your pet are enormous. Spaying reduces or even prevents many serious illnesses such as mammary gland tumors, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer. Puppies and kittens should preferably be spayed or neutered no later than 6 months of age. Neutering reduces many objectionable behaviors in males such as marking or spraying and roaming. It also eliminates the chance of testicular cancer and reduces chances for prostate cancer.
  • Special Diet Considerations- Sometimes young pets have digestive problems resulting in diarrhea or vomiting. The veterinarians at your Winston-Salem Veterinary Hospital are happy to work with you to find the exact diet and dietary products to resolve your pet’s problems.
  • Behavioral Training and Socialization- A proper plan for training and socializing your new pet should be started as soon as possible. We can help you get your pet off on the right paw to being a well-adjusted, well-behaved member of the family.
