COVID-19 and Pets

We were surely surprised when reports indicated that some cats and dogs were believed to have contracted with the coronavirus, the virus that causes COVID-19. This, of course, comes after tigers at New York's Central Park Zoo tested positive for the virus, supposedly after coming into contact with an asymptomatic zookeeper. At Larchmont Animal Clinic, we're proud to serve Hancock Park and the greater Los Angeles area as more than just a trusted veterinary clinic, but as a trusted source of information. In the wake of this pandemic, our veterinarians and staff are not just concerned with the effect that the virus has on humans, but what impact it could have on our pets as well. Here's a look at what we know so far and how these current unprecedented times affect the relationship with our pets.

Tips For Keeping Pets Safe in the Age of Coronavirus

The good news so far is that pets contracting the COVID-19 are rare. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believe that the animals contracted the disease from humans. While the CDC acknowledges that more research and studies are still needed to learn about the short- and long-term effects of COVID-19 on pets, right now, it doesn't believe that animals can spread it to humans. However, as we previously noted, it's believed that humans can pass it to animals. Here's how we suggest keeping your pets safe in the era of COVID-19:

  • Treat them as family members: We certainly think of our pets as family members, so let's treat them that way. Noting this, prevent them from interacting with people or other animals outside of your immediate household. As most Americans have transitioned to working from home, this can be a great opportunity to spend one-on-one time with your pets.
  • Walk dogs on a leash: If you walk your dogs, do so on a leash and follow the same social distancing rules that humans are suggested to comply with. That is, keep dogs at least 6 feet from other humans and animals. Unfortunately, at this time, it's best if you don't allow anyone outside of your household to pet your animal.
  • Stay in touch with your vet: If you think your pet may have contracted COVID-19 or is showing symptoms consistent with the virus, like coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue, contact your vet or animal hospital immediately.
