What are Pet Allergies?

Pet allergies are often the result of an animal's immune system overreacting to something on the skin. Certain breeds of dogs may be more prone to allergies than others. Labs, Dalmatians, Boxers, Golden Retrievers, and various types of Terriers are breeds that may have more problems with allergies. There is not generally any specific type of cat breeds that are more susceptible. There are several specific types of allergies.

  • Environmental Allergies
  • Food Allergies
  • Parasitic or Fungi Allergies

What are The Symptoms of Allergies?

Most allergic reactions are noticed on the skin. If a dog or cat has an allergy it will likely manifest itself when the animal is still young, although that is not always the case. Some specific allergic reactions may include the following:

  • Bumps on the Skin
  • Facial Swelling
  • Coughing and Sneezing
  • Runny Eyes or Nose
  • Compulsive Scratching

There are sometimes more serious reactions to allergies such as vomiting or seizing. You will want to bring your pet in to see a veterinarian if the animal is experiencing any of these symptoms.

What Treatment Options are Available?

A veterinarian will want to thoroughly examine your pet when trying to determine what the pet may be allergic to. A vet will likely look for skin parasites such as fleas. The vet may prescribe a bland diet to rule out any food allergies. If it is determined that your pet has an environmental allergy treatment may be as simple as trying to keep the animal away from the allergen. A vet may prescribe medications for your pet. More frequent bathing may also help or using special types of shampoo.
