What should I do with medications I am no longer using?

Although one should always complete the course of medication prescribed for your pet, when patients are ill they may have medication regimens that change.  Because of this, people are bound to have unused medications that require disposal.  What should you do with them?  We do not want to throw them in the trash where they may contaminate the environment.  Some patients can require injections, and then there are the leftover syringes and needles, how should they be disposed of to ensure safety for everyone?

Thankfully, Santa Clara County has programs for disposal of both unused medications and sharps (including needles/syringes).  A number of local pharmacies, hospitals, and service institutions act as drop off locations.  Links to drop off locations broken down by town are:
