Emergency
Our emergency doctors are available 24/7 to cover walk-in emergencies, care for hospitalized patients, and admit referrals that have difficulty coming to the hospital during weekday hours. Silicon Valley Veterinary Specialists is open 24 hours a day and our highly skilled and trained emergency doctors have experience in a broad area of veterinary medicine and surgery rather than in one specific area. Our emergency team sees a wide variety of medical problems ranging from minor infections to life threatening trauma. Among the more common problems treated by our emergency doctors are vomiting/diarrhea, urethral obstruction, toxic ingestion/exposure, trauma, respiratory distress, snakebites, heatstroke and end-of-life care.
As with human emergency rooms, the most life-threatening cases are triaged first. Our veterinary nurses will evaluate patients when they arrive to collect vital signs prior to an examination by one of our emergency doctors.
There may be times when more stable patients may need to wait so that critical patients can be stabilized. Please know that every patient is important to us. We will take all the necessary steps to ensure all patients receive the care they need.
Critical Care
Critical care patients typically require intensive monitoring and, at times, life supporting measures in the intensive care unit before being transferred back to the care of a primary care veterinarian. Critical care patients often come to Silicon Valley Veterinary Specialists due to injury or the sudden development of an acute life threatening disease or illness. Occasionally patients receive critical care following a major surgery when they are considered too unstable.
