Spring has sprung, flowers are blooming, and Easter Weekend is upon us.

For those who celebrate this holiday, it is a time of joy, fun, and (probably) candy.  Our pets may enjoy the festivities, but a number of items can prove harmful to them, so try to limit exposure.

Easter lilies are beautiful, but can cause severe kidney complications in cats.

Easter baskets may be filled with chocolates and other candies that may be harmful to our pets.  The sugar-free sweetener xylitol may be present in candy or gum, or could be used in baked goods.  When ingested by dogs it can cause severe complications with the liver or life threatening low blood sugar.  Raisins that could be present in candies or baked treats can cause kidney failure in our dogs.  So be sure to keep all human-intended treats out of reach of your pets.

Synthetic Easter grass may get all over the house this weekend.  It may be a pretty basket filler, but it can be appealing to our furry family, and can cause them great harm.  Cats especially may be interested in it, and if ingested, it can cause intestinal obstructions that may require surgery to resolve.  So be sure to keep this away from your pets as well.

We wish you all a safe and happy Easter Weekend.  As always, if you have any concerns about your pet’s health, have them evaluated by your regular veterinarian, or a 24 hour Emergency Clinic, SVVS.
