Laser Surgery

Improving Care & Safety with Lasers

Lasers have become an important veterinary tool for both surgery and pain management therapy.

In all branches of modern medicine, including veterinary medicine, surgeons are rapidly replacing metal cutting tools with lasers. A laser is a tool that produces a thin stream of highly concentrated light. For surgery, lasers offer a number of advantages for pets, including:

  • Less bleeding—As a laser cuts into the skin, it seals small blood vessels thereby reducing bleeding.
  • Less pain—In addition to sealing small blood vessels, the laser also seals fluid-carrying lymph vessels, which prevent fluid build up and swelling underneath the skin.
  • Reduced risk of infection—The heat of the laser kills bacteria in the area being cut, thereby reducing the risk of infection after surgery.
  • Faster recovery—Because there is less bleeding, swelling, pain, and possibility of infection, your pet will experience a faster recovery from the surgery.
