Start Your Puppy or Kitten Off on the Right Paw!
Bringing a new puppy or kitten into the family is always a happy and exciting event, but along with your new bundle of joy comes responsibility. Soon after bringing your new pet home, a visit to your veterinarian within the first few days will be necessary to make sure he or she is healthy.
This visit should be the first of regular, semi-annual wellness care examinations for your pet. At these visits, your puppy or kitten’s lifestyle and risk factors will be evaluated and vaccine recommendations will be made.
Most puppies will need vaccinations for the following canine diseases:
- Canine distemper
- Rabies
- Leptospirosis
For your kitten, we recommend the following vaccinations:
- Feline distemper
- Feline leukemia
- Rabies
For both puppies and kittens, we also recommend that they be tested for intestinal parasites during this examination. In addition to being harmful for your new pet, these parasites can be transmitted from pet to owner.
During this initial visit, we will also discuss spaying or neutering. While spaying and neutering are common surgeries performed regularly by most veterinarians, this does not mean they should be considered complication free. These procedures involve anesthetizing and operating on your pet. To ensure the highest degree of safety, we follow the strict American Animal Hospital Association guidelines for using anesthesia on a pet.
