A Dog with your Day

National Dog Day in August

Did you know there are likely over 900 million dogs in the world, including an estimated 78 million dogs in the United States? Of course, they deserve to be celebrated, and every dog will have its day this summer.

National Dog Day is observed annually on Aug. 26 and encourages ownership of all breeds. According to the National Day Calendar, it's one of over 1,500 national days, and here at Katy Area Veterinary Medical Group, we're celebrating right along with our fur patients and their families.

The History of National Dog Day

According to various sources, National Dog Day was founded back in 2004 by pet & home lifestyle expert Colleen Paige. Ms. Paige is also the founder of other celebratory pet days, including National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day, and National Cat Day. She has lent her time and energy to help bring attention to the plight of animals and encourage adoption.

National Dog Day is truly designed to celebrate all dogs and to highlight the number of dogs that need homes each year.

How We Can Help Celebrate National Dog Day

Among our locations — Highland Knolls Veterinary Hospital, Spring Green Pet Clinic, and Grand Morton Animal Hospital — every veterinarian and staff member believe it is his or her responsibility to help educate pet parents and offer resources that enable owners to learn how to best take care of their dogs.

The National Dog Day website also encourages spending time as volunteer, donating supplies, or organizing a fundraiser for a local animal shelter. Many shelters in the southwest Houston area are always in need of extra hands, help, and resources.
