Benefits of Regular Dog and Cat Teeth Cleaning

Did you know that 85 percent of all pets will have periodontal disease by the time they reach 3 years of age? Common dental diseases can lead to bad breath, difficulty chewing and tooth loss. In certain cases, bad bacteria can form under the gum and eventually travel to the kidneys, liver, and heart. Routine visits with our cat and dog dentist, along with regular at-home care are the best ways to fight against and remove the buildup of tartar from your pet’s teeth.

Common Pet Dental Problems

Our Katy veterinarian recommends that your pet’s teeth are examined at least once each year to check for early warning signs of more serious conditions. With regular dental screenings, we can make sure that your pet’s teeth and gums are healthy and suggest additional cleaning steps as needed. However, it’s important to schedule an appointment with our dog and cat dentist if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Teeth that are covered in tartar or badly discolored
  • Extra teeth or baby teeth that haven’t been lost
  • Pain in or around the mouth
  • Swelling or bleeding from the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or dropping food from the mouth
  • Excessive drooling

If you recognize any of these common dental problems, be sure to be careful when evaluating your dog or cat’s mouth. Additionally, sometimes pets may become irritable if they are experiencing dental pain or other issues. If you have noticed a significant change in your pet’s behavior it is always a good idea to make a visit to our offices for a checkup.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s Dental Consultation

During your pet’s comprehensive dental consultation, we will examine their teeth, tongue, and gums as well as the outside area of the mouth. We pay special attention to your pet’s gums to make sure that they are pink and healthy. If we notice any dental problems at this time, we will discuss treatment options with you.

Dental cleanings are designed to help keep your pet’s mouth and body healthy. If we find signs of any common dental conditions, a dental cleaning may be necessary to prevent further health problems. After completing some blood work and in some cases a urinalysis, we will determine if your pet is healthy enough to go under anesthesia. Anesthesia is necessary for pet dental work so that we can safely clean the gum line or extract bad teeth without causing unnecessary stress or discomfort.

We may also recommend that you withhold food for a set amount of time before the procedure to avoid an upset stomach or complications during the cleaning. During the cleaning, we will check for signs of gum disease, cavities and any other signs of an oral infection or cancers. In most cases, your pet will be able to return home right after treatment.
