At Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic, our Portland veterinarian has been proudly serving the surrounding communities for more than two decades. Pet Wellness Care

Our veterinarian Dr. Kenneth DeRemer recommends biannual wellness exams for all dogs, cats, pocket pets and small mammals. During this visit, Dr. DeRemer will perform a full physical,  screen for parasites, and may conduct diagnostic blood work. These tests provide an important baseline measurement of your pet’s health. They also help our vet team identify potential health conditions before your pet shows obvious physical symptoms. Just like with humans, early intervention helps us better manage potential health problems.

Pet Vaccinations

The best way to keep your pet healthy is to ensure that he or she is up-to-date on all required vaccinations. In addition to Rabies vaccination, we may recommend the DHPP canine series (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus), and Leptospirosis. Dogs that frequent boarding and grooming salons should also be vaccinated against Bordetella (kennel cough). For cats, we offer the FVRCP series (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) and feline leukemia vaccination (FELV). Our small animal clinic also provides the full puppy/kitten shot series starting at 8-10 weeks once an animal is weaned.

Pet Dental Care

Did you know that the majority of cats and dogs three years or older suffer from periodontal disease? Plaque build-up along a pet’s gum line can lead to serious oral health problems. Plaque can also push away the gum line, creating pockets for bacterial infection and gum disease. An annual pet dental cleaning is the best way to protect your pet from oral health problems. During this cleaning, our Portland veterinarian will scrape away plaque and polish your pet’s teeth. During a pet dental, we use advanced digital dental radiology equipment to look beneath the gums to detect otherwise invisible problems that can affect your pets health.  Our friendly staff can also show pet owners the best way to properly brush a pets’ teeth at home.

Pet Surgery

Our state-of-the-art surgical suite is fully equipped for spay and neuter operations, orthopedic pet surgery, and pet dental surgery. We use radiography for precise diagnosis. Our veterinary hospital follows strict pain management protocols. Prior to administering anesthesia, we conduct diagnostic blood work. Following pet surgery, we will send your pet home with clear instructions for post-surgical care. We recognize that even routine operations like spay and neuter can be stressful for both pets and their owners. Our compassionate care and responsive customer service will help your pet’s surgery go as smoothly as possible.

Portland Emergency Vet Care

When an emergency happens, our veterinarian can be ready at a moment’s notice. We provide emergency and urgent pet care, no appointment required. Emergencies such as car accidents, accidental poisoning, chocolate ingestion, or dog and cat fights require immediate veterinary care. Simply give us a call on your way to the animal hospital; our veterinary team will be ready to assist upon arrival.

Microchipping

Is your pet microchipped? If not, this is highly recommended. Microchipping involves the placement of a small computer chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under your pet's skin. This chip is embedded with a unique number that is connected to your personal contact information, such as your address and phone number. In the event that your pet goes missing and is found without tags, a microchip scanner can pick up that unique ID number, which can then be used to get into contact with you and reunite you with your pet. 

Spay and Neuter Surgery

Almost all pets domesticated pets should be spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters. However, spaying or neutering your pet can also protect his or her health by making your pet less prone to developing reproductive cancer later in life. This surgery can also improve the temperament of a domesticated pet by making them less likely to run away, spray, or engage in similar behavior. We can perform spay and neuter procedures right here in our office.

Flea and Tick Treatment

All pets should have some kind of flea and tick prevention plan in place. Even indoor pets (such as cats) are at risk if another pet (such as a dog) brings in pests from outdoors. Not sure which prevention plan is best for your pet? Our veterinarian would be happy to make a recommendation based on your specific needs. From once-a-month oral medications to flea collars and topical medicines, there are plenty of options available to keep your pet safe.

Senior Pet Care

As your pet ages, he or she may require special care, including more frequent wellness exams and screening for common age-related diseases. Our veterinarian is happy to offer dedicated senior pet care services to stay on top of changes in your pet's health. These more frequent exams can help us to detect diseases and other medical conditions early on, improving the chances for successful treatment. We can also make recommendations for at-home changes you can make to help your pet continue to age gracefully and comfortably in your home.
