Pet Illness

Your pets can become sick seemingly overnight at times, just as your human family members can. You should always keep an eye on them for any behavior that is different from normal and signs or symptoms of sickness. At Forest Hill Animal Hospital in Germantown, our veterinarians offer expert urgent care for your sick pets. There are some signs and symptoms that should prompt you to take your pet in for emergency pet care.

.

Vomiting or Diarrhea

Pets will on occasion have diarrhea or vomit; however, if they vomit several times in one day, act lethargic and lack an appetite, they need emergency pet care. Your pet may also have eaten something they shouldn't have and may have blood in their vomit. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be signs of parasite infections.

Decreased Activity or Lack of Appetite

If your dog or cat is resting more than they usually do and not interested in their food, they may be suffering from, fever or pain. If these conditions last more than 24 hours, you need to take them to the vet. In cats, if they go even a few days without eating they can accumulate fat in the liver, which can cause liver failure.

Urination Changes

An increase or decrease in thirst and urination in dogs and cats can signal you to serious diseases and conditions. Excessive thirst and urination can be signs of diabetes, liver or kidney disease or adrenal gland disease. On the other hand, too little urination or straining to urinate indicates bladder stones or a urinary tract infection. All of these signs need to be addressed as soon as possible for treatment with urgent care.

Persistent Coughing

A persistent cough in your pet is definitely a reason to visit veterinarians. It may be a symptom of kennel cough, heart disease, heart worms or a lung disease, all of which are very serious conditions that require treatment.

Lameness or Stiffness

If your pet is older, they may appear lame or stiff especially when they get up from lying down. This can be a sign of arthritis or it can be a sign of an injury.
