Chronic Conditions Needing Pharmaceutical Help

Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism.

• When a dog's thyroid doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone (thyroxine), she has hypothyroidism. This is a common condition in dogs, especially Golden Retrievers, Dobermans, and Irish Setters. Symptoms include weight gain, sluggishness, decreased appetite, feeling cold, and hair loss. If your dog has hypothyroidism, our veterinarian will most likely put her on L-thyroxine, a manufactured hormone which will help her maintain an optimal hormone level.
• Cats are more prone to the opposite thyroid problem, hyperthyroidism. If your cat has hyperthyroidism, his thyroid produces too much thyroxine. He may meow more than usual, become more active, sometimes to the point of being hyperactive.  He will also eat more yet lose weight and visit the litter box more often. Hyperthyroidism can be treated several ways, including removing the thyroid gland, radioactive iodine treatments, a special diet, or with medication.

Bacterial Infections.

Both dogs and cats can fall prey to bacterial infections. Virtually no part of the body is immune to bacteria. Infections may be caused by a number of different type bacteria, namely staphylococcus (staph), streptococci (strep), spirochete, or brucella. Depending on the type of bacteria, our veterinarian will prescribe an anti-biotic medication such as penicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin, trimethoprimsulfa, and enrofloxacin. Unlike thyroid medications, you only need give antibiotics to your pet until the infection clears up. However, since the vet will prescribe the exact amount of medication he believes will be needed, it is important that you give your pet all of the allotted medication.
