Microchipping Provided at Forest Hill Animal Hospital Veterinarian in Germantown, TN

If your pet runs out of your yard or gets off of his or her leash, you may find yourself frantically driving around looking for him or her. Your next step might be to call every animal shelter in the area to see if someone returned your pet; however, a process referred to as microchipping is making the process simpler to get your pet returned to you. Contact our Forest Hill Animal Hospital in Germantown, TN and get your furry friend microchipped.

Definition of a Microchip

A microchip is a small device in a tiny cylinder, about the size of a grain of rice, that contains your pet's information. If your pet is returned to a place with a microchip reader, a scanner passes over the location of the chip, and the radio waves emitted by the scanner active the chip.

Microchipping Procedure

When you have your pet microchipped, a veterinarian in Germantown injects it using a hypodermic needle. Typically, we implant the chip in between your pet's shoulder blades, so it's easier to find the chip when someone scans your pet. The procedure causes the same amount of pain as your pet's routine vaccinations, but if you're worried about the pain or your pet may not respond well, you might want to opt to have the procedure performed when you get your pet spayed or neutered.

It's also a very safe procedure with limited risks. Your pet could develop an infection or irritation around the sight, but it's not common to experience any side effects from it.

Inputting Information

During your appointment for microchipping with a vet, you must input your pet's personal information, such as your phone number, so your pet may be returned to you. It's possible to store other information for quick reference, but it's up to you what you want to be inputted. You don't need to worry about the information getting into the wrong hands. The only way for anyone to read the microchip is with a specialized scanning device, which is only in designated facilities. The people who have access to the scanner are well-qualified and have undergone the necessary clearances to handle the information.
