Digital Ultrasound

Digital Ultrasound at Danforth Animal Hospital

Danforth Animal Hospital, your veterinarian for Edmond, Guthrie, and Oklahoma City, has made major investments in advanced in-house diagnostic capabilities for even better pet care. One of our most important diagnostic tools is digital ultrasound. We would like to tell you more about it.

.

What is different about digital ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a lot like a diagnostic radar. A probe generates low-energy sound waves with a frequency of 3 to 9 million vibrations per second. These sound waves reflected off of a pet's body tissues and reveal the structure within.

The difference between digital ultrasound and analog ultrasound is a lot like the difference between digital TV reception and analog TV reception. You may remember the time we sometimes got fuzzy reception on TV because we were all using analog antennas. With digital TV signals, we get reliably clear images that can even be transmitted over the Internet.

The same principle applies to digital ultrasound in pet care. With digital ultrasound, your veterinarian not only gets a sharper image of what's going on beneath the fur without any pain for your pet, images can be stored and (with a little difficulty) transmitted for future reference and consultation.

How does digital ultrasound improve pet care?

One of the most important uses of digital ultrasound is assisting the diagnosis of abdominal issues. Veterinarians can get a good idea of what's going on the in the abdomen through palpation, that is, by gently touching the abdomen to feel what's swollen or out of its usual alignment. There is one major problem with this technique: tummy troubles usually hurt.

Abdominal issues can be intensely painful. Ultrasound is a safer and far more comfortable way of doing an examination on your dog or cat, and, even for veterinarians who have treated tens of thousands of pets and who have years of experience, a more precise diagnostic tool in pet care.

Doesn't every vet have digital ultrasound?

Digital ultrasound is becoming more and more common, but not every veterinary practice has made the investment in equipment and training to start using it in pet diagnosis and treatment. At Danforth Animal Hospital, we are dedicated to high-quality pet care and we have made the investments we need to provide it.
