Veterinary Internship

Alpine Animal Hospital has one full-time intern per year.  Internships start in June and the next opening is for June of 2020; we are currently accepting applications.  Our program emphasizes learning and is a fantastic opportunity for a graduate, interested in rural mixed practice, to gain experience - and to do so in a breathtaking physical environment surrounded by the Rocky Mountains.

Alpine Animal Hospital has one year-long internship per year. It is heartening to see how many qualified future vets are interested in this opportunity; unfortunately we are only equipped to accept one intern and the best way to be considered is to have participated in an externship with us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Type of Practice:

Our Practice has undegone a restructure and we hve split the companion animal and equine/large animal services into two separate practices:  Alpine Animal Hospital and Alpine Equine Hospital.  As the Internship is a "shared" program, participants will have the opportunity to experience both disciplines.

Facilities:

Built in 2010, 10,400 square feet
Medical/Repro/Surgery facility with 4heated stalls and lameness/treatment areas.
The practice is equipped for digital radiology, ultrasonography,  focused shock wave, thermography, and endoscopy.
Surgery suite is available for routine and elective procedures as well as emergency surgeries.

Equine Case Load:

Sport Horses (hunters, jumpers, saddleseat, dressage)
Broodmares (routine, ET, frozen semen)
Pleasure Horses

Companion Animal Caseload: restricted to general practice feline and canine and specialty dentistry

Types of Cases (estimated % by system or categories):

Equine:
Lameness – 25%
Repro – 25%
Medicine and Surgery – 15%
Routine (wellness, dentistry)- 20%
Other Pleasure Horse Work – 15%

Companion Animal:
Wellness – 35%
Dentistry and Surgery- 35%
Routine (wellness, dentistry )- 15%
Other/Nutrition; restricted to dogs and cats- 20%

Estimated Breakdown of Daily or Weekly Load:

Caseload will reflect the practice. Work week will vary with the time of the year, averaging 50-55 hours/week. Less time could be spent, but doing so would mean not availing oneself of the learning opportunities offered.

Philosophy of Internship:

THIS MIXED ANIMAL INTERNSHIP IS FOCUSED ON LEARNING. Areas of training include: Dentistry, Radiology, Reproduction, Practice Management, Client Education, Fluid Therapy, Laboratory, Pediatrics. General Medicine, Ultrasonography, Endoscopy, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Technical Skills, Lameness, Shock wave, stem cell, PRP and IRAP lameness therapies.
The learning protocol is available upon request.

Prerequisites of Application and Internship:

The applicant will provide a CV and a letter of application that addresses their desire to be involved in an internship.
Three letters from individuals that can attest to the applicant’s skill, work ethic and personality. A visit to or externship at the practice is recommended.
