Common Pet Problems: What Veterinarians Want You to Know

Have you recently brought home a new cat, dog, or bird? Whether you're a new pet owner or you've been in the pet parent game for a while, there's no doubt that you'll run into some ups and downs with your new pet. At North Central Animal Hospital, our veterinarians are here to offer some tips on common pet problems for your cats, dogs, or birds.

House Training

It takes time to get your pet used to going to the bathroom in a specific place. Cats tend to use their litter box without much training, but getting dogs to do their business outdoors can be a different story. Positive reinforcement is key. Be sure to give your pets a treat every time they go to the bathroom outside, and don't scold or shame them when they go indoors. Over time, they'll associate going outside with getting a treat and everyone wins!

Chewing

Puppies and kittens love to chew, and for good reason! Their adult teeth need help getting through their gums. Provide them with plenty of chew toys, and don't be afraid to use some bitter apple spray (available at pet retailers) to deter them from making a chew toy out of your furniture.

Separation Anxiety

Your pets look at you as the constant in their lives, and it can be hard when you're away from home. Your veterinarian can offer tips on dealing with separation anxiety that might be helpful for your pet, such as leaving the TV or music on when you leave, providing your pet with a shirt that smells like you, or providing your pet with a den-like environment to help them feel safe and secure.
