Ear infections

Itchy Skin and Ear Infection Often Happens Together

Certain types of dogs can be particularly prone to itchy skin and ear infections due to the way the ear canal is shaped. It can have both horizontal and vertical crevices, making debris hard to remove. The shape of the ear flap can make these inner passages difficult to access as well and can trap moisture inside.

There is a link between itchy skin and ear infection, and because of this, notify your vet of any excessive scratching. According to Embrace Pet Insurance, ear infections rank number three of the most common ailments in dogs and cats. Many problems that cause skin irritation also cause ear infections, and that's why you should pay attention to the skin condition of your pet.

When to Call Your Veterinarian

Be sure to speak with your vet if you notice redness in the interior ear or if you smell an odor. You may be able to observe yeast overgrowth, particularly if this is causing an irritating skin condition, and this may be accompanied by a discharge. Your pet may also be in pain and show signs of discomfort, and they may seem restless or agitated and show a reluctance to be touched. They may also shake or tilt their heads in an attempt to get more comfortable.

Sometimes you might notice your pet having balance issues, and if this situation is prolonged, it can affect them systemically, resulting in a loss of appetite. Tell your vet if you have observed ear mites or foreign substances inside their canal, such as foxtail plants. Avoid getting water directly into your pet's ear when you are bathing them, and check their ears after they have been swimming.

Sneaky Skin Condition Causes

Food allergies are an often overlooked culprit when it comes to itchy skin and ear infections, and many foods bother pets. Common issues include several food proteins, and environmental substances, such as mold, cigarette smoke, and pollen can irritate pets, affecting both their skin condition and their ears.

It's important to keep ears free of moisture and clear of debris, and your vet can answer any further questions you may have.
