Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy Tplo

TPLO Repair for Torn Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL)

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) X-rayThe Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is currently the preferred procedure to correct a torn Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL/ACL) in a dog.  This surgery gets dogs back to normal function faster and has fewer potential complications than other available treatment options.

The Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL/ACL) is the primary stabilizing ligament in your dog’s knee.  When the CCL is completely torn, the pet’s knee is highly unstable which results in damage to the protective structures inside the knee.  This ultimately leads to severe arthritic changes in the affected joint.  While partially torn ligaments do not result in the same instability, constant pressure on the damaged tissue causes chronic pain and inflammation that can also lead to arthritic changes.

The TPLO is a revolutionary procedure where the veterinary surgeon creates a surgical fracture (“osteotomy”) at the top of the lower leg bone (the tibia).  The upper portion of the cut bone is then rotated and plated in place based on a dog’s specific anatomical measurements.  The goal is that the top of the tibia (the plateau) is leveled out which changes the stifle geometry and makes the Cranial Cruciate Ligament unnecessary.

While the TPLO procedure has an excellent success rate, it is important that owners follow care and rehabilitation instructions to prevent possible complications and allow for the most positive surgical outcome.  For best results and the fastest recovery, TPLO patients should receive physical rehabilitation by a Canine Rehabilitation professional.  All Pets Animal Hospital is proud to now offer this service as an add-on to our TPLO procedures.
