Environmental Flea Control

When attempting to control flea populations, owners often forget to treat the pet's environment, too. While pet products can go a lot way towards getting fleas under control, owners must remember to look after their homes and yards, as well.

Home Options:

Pest Control Services: There are many services now that can come to your home to kill the pests that live there. Many of them even offer guarantees that the pests will be controlled for a specific amount of time. While your house is evacuated during treatment is a great time to have your pet treated for fleas, as well!
Make sure to discuss what products the company is using and what dangers these products may present to children and pets.

Do It Yourself Pesticides: DIY sprays and "bombs" may be an inexpensive option for pest control in your home. Again, home treatment time may be a great time to have your pet treated, as well. This will get your pet out of the house and flea free before returning home.

Borax: Borax Laundry Booster is a great, non-toxic home treatment to help kill fleas. Rubbing this product in to your carpet, then vacuuming it up a hour or so later will leave crystals behind that dehydrate and kill the fleas living there.

Fleabusters Powder: This powder has been on the market for many years. It is a primarily boric acid powder (like Borax) that is specially pH balanced to be used in carpets. It is also more finely ground to stay in the carpet fibers better. Like Borax, this product kills fleas by dehydrating them.

Yard Products:

Services: The same services that treats your house probably also treat pests in your yard. Be sure to ask them about treating both places for complete flea control.

Do It Yourself Pesticides: Your home care or gardening store should have many products available designed to kill fleas and other pets in your home. Be sure to read the label to make sure these products kill fleas, as well as how to apply them and safety warnings.

Yard Nematodes: Nematodes are microscopic organism that can live in your yard. There are several products on the market which contain nematodes that feed off of flea larvae. These nematodes are harmless to humans, pets and plants, and provide a safe alternative to pesticides when considering flea control for your yard.
