Ticks! Ticks! Ticks! What You Need to Know

Forest Home Animal Clinic offers a Heartworm and Tick Disease test that veterinarians recommend annually for your dog.  Along with testing for heartworm disease the test looks for three specific tick borne diseases: Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis. These three tick borne diseases are all prevalent in Wisconsin, and other areas where ticks are common.

Please keep in mind that not all pets may show symptoms of a tick borne disease but possible symptoms to look for in your pet :

  • Fever/chills
  • Anemia
  • Fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches
  • Paralysis
  • Rash
  • Lameness

For more information on these diseases you can click on links below to be guided to two articles from vetstreet.com.

Lyme Disease

Other Tick Borne Diseases

Prevention is key to make sure your pet doesn’t get infected with tick-borne disease.  Prevention methods recommended by veterinarians are the Lyme vaccine, tick prevention and control products, checking your pet daily (especially after pet was outdoors) and immediately removing ticks that are found.  Lyme vaccine is strongly recommended for dogs along with a tick prevention product and helps prevent disease caused by Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria. There is still a risk of infection from a tick bite even if the pet is on a prevention product such as Frontline which is why vaccine is recommended as well.  Forest Home Animal Clinic offers the following types of tick (and flea) prevention and control products for your dogs (and cats):

Administer once a month - topical oil

Administer once a month - oral chew

  • Nexgard- dogs only

Wearable collar that lasts 90 days
