Your Pet’s First Road Trip
Like most veterinary clinics, at Collierville Animal Clinic, we are often asked for travel tips for pet road trips. We find that while some people prefer using our boarding services, others want to include their pets on family vacations. The first trip requires the most planning. Let's take a look at what you should consider before the trip.
Pre-Trip Planning
As you plan your road trip, make sure your pets are up to date on all vaccines. Travel can take you into areas that are unfamiliar and you want to know that your pet is healthy. Don't forget treatment for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, especially if you will be visiting wooded areas. You will also want to find out in advance if your pet gets car sickness. Normally, you can work your way up from short trips to longer ones to ease this possibility.
Also, your veterinarian can prescribe motion sickness medication if necessary. Know in advance where the rest stops are and plan for pet-friendly places to stay well in advance. Finally, make sure your pets are safe on the road by providing either a kennel or a pet safety belt to keep your pet from roaming around the vehicle.
On the Road
Most animals can benefit from a stop every two hours. During this time, he can do his business and get a drink. If it is mealtime, provide food, but give the food some time to settle before heading out on the road again. Make sure your pet is safely restrained while the vehicle is in motion. He should have enough room to sit and lie but not enough to move around the vehicle. Don't ever leave him alone in your vehicle.
