What's causing my pet to sneeze?

Your pet is sneezing for two reasons: Either there is a foreign material lodged in their nasal membranes, or the interior of the mucous membranes in their nose is inflamed. If your pet has contracted an upper respiratory infection due to allergies, kennel cough, or other airborne diseases, come to see us immediately.

If your pet was exposed to an irritant, say in toxic household sprays, fumes from gas, or pet store/salon microbial germs that linger in the air from other animals, our veterinarian needs to delve in further. They’ll need to obtain a health history of your pet and their daily activities. Oftentimes, dogs love to dig in the dirt for extra smells under the soil, or they have a high prey drive. Either way, if they're repetitively sneezing after their snout spends too much time in the earth, we want to treat their overall wellness accordingly.

Cats are silent carriers of respiratory diseases and bacteria; therefore, they show little to no symptoms of the condition. However, if they come into contact with another feline and their immune system is compromised due to emotional or physical stress, there is a triggered effect in another susceptible animal to contract a respiratory illness.

Treatment options for sneezing pets

While no aggressive treatment is needed for either a dog or a cat, our Collierville clinic does offer healing ointments and frequent cleaning of the nasal passageways with warm water and cotton balls. We can guide you on how to continue home treatment if the inflammation isn't too severe. Otherwise, we suggest a prescribed medicinal nose drops or even Benadryl in cases of allergic sneezing.

Why is my pet coughing?

Coughing in your dog or cat could be mild or severe, depending on the cause. Some pets cough if they drink water too fast, other times a cough could indicate something more serious, such as heart or lung disease.  Small dog breeds have more of a tendency, as do flat-faced Persian cats. Cats are prone to coughing up hairballs, whereas dogs will cough up something that lodges in their throat area.
