Orthopedic Surgeries From Your Collierville Veterinarian

Our orthopedic animal surgery services include:

Pet Fracture Repair Surgery

While a simple fracture may heal easily with the aid of a cast or splint, more complex fractures often require orthopedic surgery, especially in cases where the bone has broken into several segments (comminuted). Your Collierville veterinarian can use internal fixation techniques to hold the bones in the proper positions until they can grow back together. Long bones can sometimes be braved from within by inserting a metal rod into them lengthwise. Comminuted fractures can be held in place with screws driven through metal plates.

Cat or Dog Knee Surgery

The knees of both cats and dogs are vulnerable to injuries that can cause pain, stiffness, lameness and joint instability. One of the most common examples is a ruptured CCL (cranial cruciate ligament). Cat or dog knee surgery can help your pet enjoy a normal life again. Surgeries such as TPLO (triple plateau leveling osteotomy) and TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) reconstruct the joint angle so that the joint will support itself without a working CCL. Some animals may do just as well with extracapsular surgery in which a suture is installed to take over the job of the ruptured ligament.

Cat or Dog Hip Surgery

Dogs (and in rare cases, cats) can suffer from a debilitating hip condition known as dysplasia. This malformation of the hip's ball and socket joint, which begins early in life, encourages progressive joint deterioration, producing severe osteoarthritis and lameness over time. Young, non-arthritic animals may benefit from a cat or dog hip surgery called a double pelvic osteotomy or triple pelvic osteotomy. In these procedures, your Collierville veterinarian divides the bone into segments and then rotates those segments for improved hip alignment and function.

Pet Spinal Surgery

Like their human owners, pets can be vulnerable to chronic spinal joint conditions that cause pain and reduce range of motion. Degenerative disc disease, for instance, may allow bulging discs to pinch nerves, while advanced arthritis can can make motion painful. Severe chronic spinal pain can sometimes be relieved by performing surgery on a bulging disc or fusing arthritic vertebrae to prevent bone-on-bone friction.
