Collierville Veterinarian Talks About Wellness Exams

Puppies and kittens should come in for their first exam when they're around eight weeks old. You'll need to bring your pet in three more times to see our Collierville veterinarian during its first year. Adult dogs and cats should have annual exams until they reach senior status at about seven, when we like to see them in our animal hospital twice a year.

Wellness exams are often thought of as basic checkups, but they're actually a comprehensive examination of all parts of your pet's health and well-being. Some of the many details we'll cover during a pet wellness exam are:

  • Pet Vaccinations - Vaccines are medication designed to prevent your pet from developing serious diseases. Some vaccines, like the rabies vaccine, are even required by law. Vaccines come in two forms: core and non-core. Core vaccines are those that every pet gets, such as distemper vaccinations. Non-core vaccines, on the other hand, are only given to pets that need them, depending on their home environment or lifestyle.

  • Pet Weight Management - Obesity is an epidemic in the pet world, just as it is for humans. We'll weigh and measure your pet to make sure it's a healthy weight. If we find obesity, our veterinarian in Collierville will consult with you about recommended foods and ways to make sure your pet is more active, as well as about family habits centering around treats and snacks.

  • Pet Dental Care - Your pet's mouth can be the key to diagnosing a large number of internal diseases. We'll check your dog's or cat's mouth and tongue for redness and swelling, look for loose or missing teeth, and even check to make sure its breath isn't overly bad. Plaque buildup on your pet's teeth can lead to serious medical consequences. If you're not familiar with brushing or cleaning your pet's teeth, our team will teach you the proper way to do this, and will recommend a range of tools that can work with your pet.

  • Skin and Fur Management  - We'll check for parasites such as fleas, ticks and mites, as well as skin rashes that could indicate an allergy or sensitivity. If we find parasites our doctor will prescribe medication and treatment to clear your pet's skin.
