Why You Should Protect Your Pets Against Fleas and Ticks

Obviously, you don't want your cat or dog to bring fleas or ticks into your home. Fleas continue to reproduce and quickly infest your entire house. These critters will bite you and your family, and itching open these bites can lead to an infection. From your pet's perspective, fleas rob your pet of the vital nutrients he or she needs. Your pet's coat might not look as healthy. Plus, he or she could have other issues related to nutrient deficiencies as a result. 

Just like humans, pets can get diseases from parasites. Although your fluffy friend won't exhibit the same symptoms of Lyme disease as you would, they do get the disease, and it can affect them severely.  Additionally, if your pet swallows a flea, he or she is at risk for developing worms that can eventually kill your pet. 

Different Types of Flea and Tick Prevention

Flea collars are one of the most common ways to prevent fleas, but they're outdated when compared to other options.  “Spot on” flea and tick prevention treatments are applied in between your pet's shoulder blades. These "spot-on" treatments spread throughout your pet's body and deposit in your pet's sweat glands. You can use them as a flea treatment because they'll kill fleas if your pet already has them.  They repel fleas and ticks but aren't completely effective as a tick prevention method.

Oral medications are recommended, as they protect against both fleas and ticks. They're also effective at preventing many types of worms. Shampoos, sprays, powders, and dips kill fleas and ticks after your pet has them but aren't useful if you want to prevent parasites.
