What is a Special Needs Pet?

A special needs pet/dog/cat or other animal is one that suffers from a wide range of physical disabilities, behavioral issues or other ongoing condition. Dogs with physical disabilities who require special care may include missing or paralyzed limbs, diabetes, chronic allergies, and cancer. Behavioral issues might include severe separation anxiety, aggression, and social limitations. Many previously abused animals fall into this category.

Creating a Routine

As with any other family member that requires special attention, it’s important to create a routine that works for both you and your pet. Your veterinarian can help you set up times when it’s best for your pet to eat, take medication and even rest. If your pet has social anxiety or aggression behaviors, your vet may also recommend a personal trainer.

Hiring a Caregiver

If you have to be away for any length of time, it’s important to have someone you know and trust care for your pet. Your vet can help you find a pet sitter or you can drop your pet off for care at our facility for boarding.

Following Your Veterinarian’s Suggestions

For a special needs pet, your vet is an important person in your animal’s life. He will provide special medical care instruction for a sick pet. It’s important to follow these instructions completely and do everything asked in order to keep your pet healthy. If your pet is allergic, you should follow the recommended diet, and learn what ingredients are healthiest.

Mobility Assistance

If a disability prevents a special needs animal from getting around, invest in a wheelchair or other pet mobility device. There are also different types of harnesses available to help you assist a handicapped pet.
