Pet Seizures

Pet Seizures

If your pet suddenly looks confused, drops on one side, and starts paddling her legs in strange motions, she could be experiencing a seizure. Seizures are frightening and can cause panic even to the most composed pet owners. A seizure is a neurological condition characterized by temporal involuntary mental disturbance, which leads to uncontrollable muscle activities.

At Collierville Animal Clinic & Surgery Center, serving Collierville, Germantown, and Piperton, TN, our veterinarians can recognize and treat seizures.

What Causes Pet Seizures?

Some seizures, like idiopathic epilepsy, are genetically linked, but the exact causes are unknown. There can be many causes of pet seizures. The most common include:

  • Poisoning
  • Encephalitis
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Traumatic injury in the head
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease

Diagnosing Seizures

Seizures aren’t a disease, but are symptoms of an underlying condition. Visiting our veterinary staff is integral in diagnosing seizures. Our professionals can pinpoint the exact cause of the seizures by carrying out a comprehensive checkup of your pet.

The more information your vet has about your pet’s seizures, the easier it becomes to diagnose. For instance, if your dog has been playing outside and started having seizures, it could be because she ingested something toxic.

Pet Seizure Care

If your pet is having a seizure, it’s best if you remain calm. If your pet is near something that could hurt her, like stairs, furniture, or any sharp objects, gently move her away. Try to stay away from the pet’s mouth, as she could unconsciously bite you.

Try to time how long your pet’s seizure lasts. Talk to your pet calmly and gently pet her to reassure her. Carefully hold your pet, but don’t try to stop her body parts from twitching. After the end of the seizure, call your vet.

If your pet’s seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes or she has several convulsions within 24 hours (cluster seizures), you need emergency pet care a soon as possible. Acting swiftly could be the difference between the life and death of your pet. A delay in seeking urgent care could lead to overheating of your pet, resulting in brain damage.
