5 Warning Signs of Pet Dental Disease

5 Warning Signs of Pet Dental Disease from our Collierville Veterinarians

Oral health is foundational to overall health and a high quality of life, and pets need dental care just like people. Ideally, pets should receive a dental exam and cleaning at least once per year, and more often if issues arise. Collierville Animal Clinic & Surgery Center is dedicated to your pet’s overall health, including the often overlooked oral health of your pet. The following are some of the symptoms your pet could have dental disease:

1. Persistent Bad Breath

This is one of the top symptoms of pet dental disease and usually indicates the presence of bacteria and decay. Left unaddressed, it can form plaque and then tartar on the teeth. This sets the stage for gum disease and cavities.

2. Visible Plaque Buildup

Again, mouth debris and bacteria can lead to plaque on the teeth that can harden there, builds up and becomes difficult to remove. This can contribute to an even wider spread of bacteria and oral health problems. Plaque can appear dark yellow, brown or even black on your pets’ teeth.

3. Gum Disease

Gum disease can also result from excess mouth bacteria. Its symptoms are red, swollen gums that can begin to bleed. This causes tremendous pain and discomfort for your pet.

4. The Formation of Tartar

As plaque buildup persists; it can advance and become more attached to the teeth. It begins to harden and can form tartar, which is extremely difficult to remove. While plaque sets the stage for periodontal disease, tartar is a calcification around the gum line that suffocates the gingiva. It can cause tooth decay, cavities and possibly bone loss down the road.

5. Changes in Eating Patterns

Oral health problems in pets can also cause changes to their behavior around food, treats, and mealtime. If they have difficulty eating, drop food or seem to lose their appetite, this could be a sign that their oral health problems have made eating too uncomfortable.
