Lepto (leptospirosis): What You Need to Know to Protect Your Pet
Leptospirosis is commonly found in water and soil around the world. Unfortunately, your dog might suffer from leptospirosis if they become infected with the bacteria. At Collierville Animal Clinic & Surgery Center, we want all pet owners to be aware of the dangers of leptospirosis and take the proper steps to protect their pets from getting sick.
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospira is a type of bacterium that can cause leptospirosis, which is an infection that can lead to serious health effects.
One very troubling factor that you must realize is that leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease. This means that it can be transmitted from your dog to you. It is most often transmitted through contact with infected urine or substances that are contaminated with urine containing the leptospira bacteria.
How can my dog become infected?
Many activities that are commonly associated with dogs, such as going swimming in rivers or drinking from lakes, and even living in rural areas, can lead to exposure to leptospira. Dogs can even contract leptospirosis from other animals.
What are the signs of Leptospirosis?
The symptoms of lepto in dogs are similar to what a human would experience with influenza. It can lead to changes in urination, shivering, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and inflammation within the eyes. In some cases, the dog might suffer from jaundice or kidney failure.
Interestingly, some dogs might not show any signs of leptospirosis. These dogs might recover without any treatment, but there is also a risk of severe illness that can lead to death. The risk of this in dogs is the reason why you need to seek out care if you think something is amiss with your dog and it has been in an area that is commonly associated with leptospira.
How do I protect my pet from Leptospirosis?
Preventing leptospirosis in dogs is as easy as giving your dog an annual vaccination for the illness. Treatment includes giving your dog antibiotics to combat the bacterial infection. We also recommend for you to encourage your dog to urinate in an area that isn’t near standing water. In order to prevent the illness from spreading to you, avoid contact with your dog’s urine or wear gloves if you have to clean up urine. Additionally, wash your hands after contact with a dog’s waste.
