Pet Vaccinations - Are You Overdue?

Staying on Top of Your Pet's Vaccinations. Are You Overdue?

Your veterinarian will help you stay on top of what vaccines your pet needs. However, if your pet is overdue for vaccinations, you're putting him or her at risk until you see the vet and get your pet up to date. Collierville Animal Clinic & Surgery Center, located in Collierville, Tennessee, will help ensure your furry family member gets the vaccinations necessary.pet vaccinations from your veterinarian in collierville

Feline Vaccines

Some vaccines are considered noncore vaccines because they're not needed for all pets, or they're optional. The core vaccines are the ones that are strongly recommended for all cats and include the feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia virus vaccinations. It's recommended that cats receive the first dose between the ages of six to eight weeks of age. Cats should receive at least three doses of the vaccine to be given every three to four weeks. The last booster shouldn't be given any earlier than 16 weeks. If you begin getting your cat vaccinated after 16 weeks of age, he or she will only need two doses. They should be given three to four weeks apart. Your feline should get a booster at one year. Additionally, you should get your cat revaccinated every three years after that. You should also get your cat the rabies vaccine at 12 to 16 weeks of age. You should then get your cat the rabies vaccine every three years.

Canine Vaccines

The main vaccine you should worry about getting your dog is for canine parvovirus, canine adenovirus, and canine distemper. The first dose of the vaccine is recommended to be given at six to eight weeks of age. Then, dogs should receive boosters every three to four weeks. The last dose should be given at 16 weeks or later. Dogs who are over the age of 16 weeks when they receive the initial dose only need two doses of the vaccine. These two doses should be given three to four weeks apart. Canines will need a booster at one year and should receive boosters every three years thereafter. Dogs also need the rabies vaccine at 16 weeks old and will require a booster at one year and a revaccination every three years after that.
