Traveling With Your Pet: FAQ
Planning on bringing your pet with you on your trip? Our veterinarians have some tips for you! Explore answers to some of the most common pet travel questions below.
How Can I Prepare To Fly With My Pet?
Most airlines will allow you to travel with small pets, including cats and lap dogs. Pets need to be secured in a carrier for the duration of the flight. However, for larger pets, separate accommodations may need to be made and you may not be able to fly directly with your pet. Contact your departing airport for more information on flying with pets.
How Should Pets Be Transported In A Car?
If you will be traveling by car, be sure your pet is properly secured throughout the trip. Cats should be kept in a hard-sided carrier, and dogs need to be secured in the back seat (they should not be riding in the front for safety reasons). Be sure to stop frequently to allow your dog a potty break and a chance to walk around (on a leash). We do not recommend removing your cat from the vehicle; instead, keep your cat in a crate large enough to fit a small litter box and food dishes.
What Other Considerations Should I Keep In Mind?
Remember that not all pets travel well, and traveling could cause stress to pets that are used to being in familiar surroundings. If booking hotels during your trip, be sure they are pet-friendly as well.
