National Immunization Awareness Month in August

National Immunization Awareness Month in August At Jane Animal Hospital in Toronto, ON

National Immunization Awareness Month is held in August every year.  The purpose of this event is to raise awareness for immunizations for both children and adults.  Many diseases, some even deadly, can be prevented with a simple immunization.  As part of National Immunization Awareness Month, agencies partner with the National Public Health Information Coalition to help get information out into the communities to raise awareness. Here at our Jane Animal Hospital in Toronto, ON, we want to help raise awareness to help you prevent diseases.

Why Is It So Important?

We have the technology today to prevent many diseases that in the past have been fatal.  By sharing the knowledge and understanding we have of different diseases, and how to prevent them, we can ultimately eliminate certain diseases entirely.  Not only does immunization help all of humankind in the long run, but it also helps to keep you and your loved ones healthy.  By vaccinating for certain diseases as a child you can prevent further manifestations of the disease in adulthood.

Animal Immunizations

Just as we want our families to be safe we also need to consider our pets.  Similar to people pets benefit from immunizations as well.  At the Jane Animal Hospital, we offer immunizations for pets through all stages of life.  Let's take a closer look at some of the more common immunizations.

  • Cat Immunizations - As a kitten, your cat will receive a series of immunizations about every three to four weeks.  This will continue until your kitten is around four months old.  Your kitten will receive what is called the core immunizations.  These include panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, and rabies.  There are also immunizations available to help protect your cat from disease but are not considered vital for your cat's health.  These include feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, and Bordetella.  After your cat has reached adulthood most immunizations are administered every three years.
  • Dog Immunizations - Just like with cats, puppies will receive a series of immunizations when they are young.  These continue until the puppy is about 4 months old.  Among these immunizations are the core vaccines including Canine parvovirus, canine hepatitis, rabies, and distemper.  These are the immunizations that are absolutely necessary for the overall health of your dog.  After your dog has received his or her initial immunizations in the first year, your dog will have to receive updated immunizations every three years.  Non-core immunizations for dogs include Borrelia burgdorferi, Leptospira bacteria, and Bordetella.
