Toe Amputation

Toe Amputations

Dogs have thumbs, the dewclaws, even though they aren’t functional like human’s thumbs are.  This extra digit on the leg is rather weak and can easily catch onto something and break when your dog is playing. This is rather painful and can last for a while if the wound becomes infected.  Jane Animal Hospital in Toronto is your go to veterinarian to discuss the benefits of toe amputations for your pet and we will help you decide if it is beneficial for your pet.

Toe Amputations

What are Dew Claws?

Have you ever noticed the extra toenails on the inside of your dog’s front legs and in some breeds, the hind legs?  This is what is known as the dew claw.  Are these extra toenails useless or do they have a purpose?  It is actually an extra digit with tendons attached to muscles.  When your pet is running around the back yard, dew claws can provide extra support to the foot and lower leg and prevent torque in the quick turns.  During those quick turns, dew claws will dig into the ground preventing injuries or twists and can keep carpal arthritis at bay.
