Internal Procedures

Most pet exams involve an external inspection on pets, with particular attention paid to the feet, nose, skin, and other body parts for existing disorders. However, your pet could be suffering from more complex issues that require special expertise to diagnose. Such situations call for internal procedures and medicine. At Jane Animal Hospital in Toronto, we have years of experience using different internal procedures to deliver fast and accurate diagnoses.

Common Internal Procedures

When you bring your pet for a checkup, several internal procedures may be performed depending on your pet’s situation. These internal procedures include:

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is done on your pet’s large intestines to check for conditions such as tumors, ulcers, fungal infections, and inflammation. For more reliable results, a vet might combine it with gastrointestinal endoscopy. Colonoscopy can be applied as the first procedure on patients showing signs of diarrhea and weight loss.

Endoscopy

The procedure involves using an endoscope to examine your pet. An endoscope is a thin elongated tube with a video camera that records images of an animal’s internal organs. Our veterinarian will examine the recording before recommending a suitable treatment for your pet. Animal experts use endoscopy to remove foreign objects from a pet’s gastrointestinal tract.

Bronchoscopy

During a bronchoscopy procedure, veterinarians use an instrument known as a bronchoscope to examine your pet’s trachea, throat, and larynx. Sometimes, your furry friend may develop complications within his or her breathing system or in the chest region. Our doctor will examine your pet through bronchoscopy before offering treatment

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a technique similar to an x-ray that doctors use to examine an animal’s moving body parts. It involves taking images of the area to be examined and sending them to a monitor for diagnosis.

Rhinoscopy

Our veterinarian uses this procedure to diagnose complications within a pet’s nasal cavity. It involves anterior and posterior rhinoscopy. Anterior rhinoscopy is performed by inserting a rhinoscope through the nose. On the other hand, posterior rhinoscopy involves diagnosing the nasal cavity by inserting a rhinoscope through the mouth. At our animal hospital, we use rhinoscopy to diagnose complications such as tumors, foreign objects, inflammations, and fungal infections.

Joint Taps

Also known as arthrocentesis, our veterinarian uses the joint tap procedure to diagnose various joint diseases. Joint diseases might cause painful inflammations that affect a pet’s behavior and ability to move. During a joint tap, a doctor obtains some fluid from the swollen joint for examination before treating your pet.
