Understanding Periodontics

Did you know that dogs are at a high risk of developing gum issues when as early as three years old? Periodontal disease is a condition that affects the gum and teeth as a result of bacteria buildup. At Jane Animal Hospital in Toronto, ON, we offer periodontic techniques to improve your pet's dental health.

Periodontics

What Is Periodontics?

Periodontal disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria on your pet's teeth. The bacteria will eventually mineralize, turning into tartar that causes bone loss, receding gumlines, and pain or discomfort in your pet. Periodontics is a technique used to help slow the effects of periodontal disease.

Treatment Procedures

Periodontics begins with a thorough test and x-rays to help identify the severity of the condition. Once we have properly assessed your pet's condition, our periodontal dental care will provide your pet with a thorough cleaning above and below the gumline. Our veterinarians clean the gums to remove plaque and fills any open crevices to avoid the buildup of periodontal disease.  Our pet periodontist can remove gingivitis from the gums and extract teeth if necessary.

When Does Your Pet Need Periodontics?

There are various early signs of gum disease you can easily spot in your pet. An initial sign of periodontal disease is red inflammation on the margins of the gums. Distinguishing between bad breath caused by food and bad breath caused by periodontal disease is also imperative to your pet's health. If you can spot periodontal disease in its early stage, it will be easier to treat and allow us to get your pet's gums back to normal. Although pet's experience periodontal disease differently, symptoms often include:

  • Receding gums
  • Sneezing and nasal discharge
  • Bleeding gums
  • Loosening of the teeth
  • Growing lumps under the eyes or in the mouth

You may also note behavioral changes such as challenges when picking up food, chewing on one side, and becoming shy, refusing pats on the head.
