Emergency Care

emergency pet care in toronto

Your pets are another member of the family. They should have access to the same comprehensive care as the rest of your family, including in emergency situations.

At Jane Animal Hospital, we offer emergency services for your four-legged friend. Our Toronto veterinarians can quickly diagnose and treat injuries and sicknesses in your pet.

Signs Your Pet Needs Emergency Care

While we’re open six days a week and you’re always welcome to bring in your pet, we know some situations are more urgent than others. As a pet owner, it’s important that you can differentiate between a standard health situation and an emergency.

Here are the signs your pet needs immediate medical care:

  • Sudden swelling of a body part
  • Car accident or another incident
  • Slips and falls
  • Pulse changes and breathing changes
  • The animal is clearly hurt, as they’re whimpering or mewling
  • Limping
  • Prolonged diarrhea and vomiting
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Wounds, especially bleeding ones

Assessing the Situation in an Emergency

Seeing your pet in such an unfortunate state can really test your emotions. You might not be sure what to do or how to handle the situation. We recommend clearing children from the room, especially if the pet has an obvious broken bone or is bleeding. If the children get upset, the animal will get upset, too.

Gently carry your sick or wounded animal out of the house to the car. You may want to wrap them softly in blankets and put them in a bed or carrying container. Then bring them to us. We’ll take care of dressing a wound and administering medication if this is necessary. We don’t advise you to do this yourself in an emergency situation.
