A Day in the Life of a Veterinary Technician

Ever wonder what it is like to work in an animal hospital? Well, It’s not exactly Grey’s Anatomy. It's more CSI Miami meets Modern Family. Think of the family including a four legged friend named “Eenie Beenie” or a 2lb Teacup Yorkshire Terrier named “Megatron.” Sometimes my job makes me laugh. Can you see me going to the waiting room and calling in the next patient? On the other hand, our animal friends can’t talk so we get a random presentation of a cat that suddenly can’t use its left hind leg and we have to interrogate the owner to find out why the leg appears to be broken when in fact it is not. A bit of further investigation revealed a blood clot in the leg causing numbness. It certainly is never a dull day around here.

My day usually starts at 8:30 in the morning when our surgical patients start to arrive for admission to hospital. Nervous owner are brought into the exam room to sign a consent form for the procedure and their pets are brought to the surgical prep area for their pre-anesthetic exam, IV catheter placement and pre-surgical medications. From there things start to move pretty quickly as animals go under anesthetic, surgery is performed and the next patient is prepped while the first patient recovers and so on till all surgeries are completed. Then we need to prepare everyone for discharge in the afternoon to early evening. All the while this is happening we are answering phone calls, seeing appointments, filling prescriptions and doing x-rays.

Veterinary Technicians work in a very fast paced and ever changing environment. We have to be prepared for anything and everything and think on our feet. We rarely get to sit down and even getting a ten minute coffee break is a challenge. But we love it. In fact, most of us thrive on it. We love our patients, the puppy and kitten exams that give us free cuddle time, and the emergencies that get our hearts racing. We became veterinary technicians not just because we LOVE animals but also because we love the thrill of the job. No 2 days are exactly the same and that is perfect for us!  So bring us your sick, your injured and new additions. We love to see them all!
