Bees: A Possible Danger to Our Pets

By Yasmin Neale

Hello Jane Animal Hospital Lovers,

Allow me to introduce myself to you, my name is Yasmin and I work as a receptionist and veterinary assistant at Jane Animal Hospital. Earlier this summer I signed up to be part of a bee beard contest.

Yes- you read that right. A BEE beard contest… most people just think this idea is crazy to begin with but when I say I am an animal lover I mean it.

Now what does my insanity have to do with your pet?

Well, many people are allergic to bee stings and just like people dogs and cats can also have serious allergic reactions. These reactions can even be fatal. I am not looking to produce any further fear about bees in particular but just to share some knowledge I have learned while working at the clinic.

What symptoms should you be looking for?

If you notice your pet has any of these symptoms including shock, trouble breathing, vomiting, urination, or trouble controlling their bowels this could be a sign of a severe allergic reaction. If your pet gets stung by a bee and you notice any of these symptoms be sure to call your veterinary or bring your animal to an emergency hospital as this can be fatal.

If you see your pet playing or chasing bees try to stop them as prevention is the best way to avoid this situation all together. However, we know that our furry friends don't always listen to us so look for symptoms and signs of an anaphylactic reaction.
